Our Veterinary Staff

Doctors

Dave Barz, DVM

After graduation from Iowa State's Veterinary School in the
spring of '74, an energetic naive Iowa farm boy brought his new
bride to practice veterinary medicine in Mitchell, South Dakota.
In 1976, we moved to a Tripp, SD farm to raise our children in
a rural atmosphere.  A clinic was established in Parkston, SD
with haul-in facilities and Northwest Veterinary Supply began.

Thirty-five years later, I still enjoy my practice, the area and my
clients.  I prefer to work with large animals in a rural family
farm situation.  We have always promoted new management
strategies and production records.  "Without knowing where
we've been, how can we plot our future!"

Ten years ago we added a satellite clinic in Wagner, SD and we are now adding a
facility in Mitchell, SD.  It appears my life has come full circle with the Mitchell
building.

Our goal has always been to:
- Help producers utilize their records to understand where they rank with similar
producers in our area and in other states.
- Formulate management, vaccination and treatment strategies to help produce
    animals more efficiently and economically.
- Devise value-added marketing systems allowing producers to generate more
    dollars for their production.

Chris Friedel, DVM
I grew up in the Sandhills of Nebraska on a ranch south
of Stuart, NE.  I recieved my Bachelor's degree from the
university of Nebraska Lincoln and then my doctorate
from Kansas State University Veterinary school in 2008.  I
enjoy all aspects of veterinary medicine with special
intrest in beef cattle and small animals.

My wife Amber is a nurse at Avera St. Benedict Health
Center in Parkston, SD.  We have a boxer named harley
and we all enjoy spending time with family, friends and
camping.

Nathan Schmidt, DVM
I grew up on a livestock and grain farm near Columbus, NE
where I was the youngest of 4 boys.  After graduating from
Lakeview High School, I attended the University of Nebraska-
Lincoln majoring in Veterinary Science.  In 2010, I completed
my DVM degree at Iowa State University College of Vet Med
in Ames, IA.  At Northwest Veterinary Supply, I practice
general mixed animal medicine, with emphasis on bovine
production medicine.  I enjoy all aspects of veterinary
medicine, but have special interests in bovine
reproduction, including ultrasound techniques, fetal sexing,
embryo recovery and embryo transfer.

My hobbies include fishing, hunting, golfing, enjoying the outdoors and following
the Nebraska Cornhuskers.  A majority of my free time is spent traveling to spend
time with family including my 6 nephews spread out across Nebraska.

Kevin Thiele, DVM

As another Nebraska native, I joined the Northwest Veterinary
team in September of 2010.  Growing up on a farm near Elgin,
NE I was the youngest of 4 children.  Like some of my
colleagues I also attended the University of Nebraska- Lincoln
where I graduated with a B.S. majoring in Veterinary Medicine.
I moved on to Kansas State College of Veterinary Medicine
where I completed my D.V.M. in 2007.  After practicing for
three years at a mixed animal practice in Nebraska we decided
to venture north to Parkston, SD.  I enjoy the great variety
one encounters on a daily basis working at a mixed
animal practice and treasure the opportunity to work and live
in a rural community.

My wife Sarah and I have a wonderful daughter, Madeline.  Sarah, is an R.N.
at Avera St. Benedict Health Center in Parkston.  As a family we all enjoy
spending time outdoors including gardening, camping, hunting, fishing, and boating.

Nathan Iliff, DVM

I am the second of four boys and grew up in the corn fields of
central Illinois in a small town north of Peoria, IL.  Raising
and showing cattle were my main hobbies  growing up both in
4-H and FFA . After high school I attended Black Hawk East
junior college and was a  member of the Horse Judging team.
Then transferring to Kansas State University I received my
bachelor’s  degree in 2006. While at KSU I continued judging
horses while being active in block and bridle and the rodeo
club. I then graduated from KSU with a DVM in 2012 and
made my way to Parkston, South Dakota.
